The relief of this territory is predominantly mountainous, being constituted by two great massifs: Gralheira massif, in which Freita, Arada and Arestal mountains are, and Montemuro massif, dominated by Montemuro Mountain, the eighth largest elevation of mainland Portugal. The relief is accentuated and steep and the average altitude of this range is of 600 meters, being able to reach the 1381 meters in Montemuro mountain. It has areas of high forest density, plateaus and numerous valleys, among which Douro, Vouga, Paiva and Bestança Valleys stand out due to their size and importance.
